Empowering Futures: Meghalaya Govt’s Innovative Vocational Training at Rehab Centres – Northeast News
The Meghalaya government is exploring the integration of vocational training programs within rehabilitation centers to assist individuals recovering from drug addiction in their reintegration into society. This initiative aims to empower recovering individuals by equipping them with vocational skills and addressing the high relapse rates among the youth.
Francis Kharshiing, the director of the Drug Reduction, Elimination & Action Mission (DREAM), recently convened a consultative meeting with professionals from various organizations, including Industrial Training Institutes, Meghalaya Skill Development, and Bosco Integrated Development Society. The meeting focused on implementing free vocational training for drug users at the state’s rehabilitation centers. Key discussions involved identifying suitable vocational courses, forming partnerships with relevant institutions, and ensuring the provision of necessary infrastructure and resources.
“Nearly 80% of drug users relapse after exiting rehabilitation centers,” Kharshiing stated. He emphasized that engaging these individuals in productive activities through vocational training could significantly reduce relapse rates. The training aims to provide them with the skills needed to achieve sustainable livelihoods.
Prestigious training institutions like Skills Development Society, Don Bosco Technical School, the Ramakrishna Mission, and Industrial Training Institutes are anticipated to play essential roles in this initiative. Kharshiing highlighted the existing free training programs offered by these centers and suggested collaboration to introduce vocational training during rehabilitation, potentially transforming the lives of individuals recovering from addiction.
Further discussions are planned with government departments such as Fisheries and Animal Husbandry and Veterinary to expand training opportunities. Kharshiing underscored the multifaceted benefits of vocational training, noting that it could boost self-esteem, foster independence, and enable individuals to become productive members of society. This proactive approach by the Meghalaya government seeks not only to curb relapse rates but also to provide a path for personal and professional growth for those overcoming substance abuse.
