Exciting Boost: India’s Per Capita Fruits and Vegetables Availability Surges, Nourishing a Healthier Nation!
In a recent report by SBI Research, New Delhi, it was highlighted that per capita availability of fruits and vegetables in India has risen by 7 kg and 12 kg, respectively, over the past decade. Leading this growth are the states of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir. On average, India now produces 227 kg of fruits and vegetables per person annually, surpassing the general recommendation of at least 146 kg. However, the report notes a significant portion of this produce is lost due to the perishable nature of these goods, affecting harvest, storage, grading, and transport processes.
The report also outlines the adverse impacts of extreme climate conditions on agricultural production, particularly foodgrain. Repeated heat and cold waves have negatively influenced foodgrain productivity, with most states experiencing a detrimental correlation between these extreme weather events and yield outputs. For instance, the Indian Council for Agricultural Research finds that a 1 degree Celsius temperature rise beyond 30 degrees during the grain filling period can notably decrease wheat yield. These climate shocks have escalated food inflation by approximately 3-4%.
The report further observes a trend towards increased urbanization, with states like Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan showing a more than 5% rise over the last decade (2014-2024). Urban areas now house about a third of India’s population. Correspondingly, personal loan data suggests heightened urbanization demand, evidenced by a 115 basis points increase in Uttar Pradesh and 97 basis points in Rajasthan. Economists predict that this shift towards urban centers will drive higher demand for fruits and vegetables, fueled by rising incomes and job opportunities in cities.
Overall, the interplay of agricultural production, climatic effects, and urbanization trends presents significant implications for India’s economic landscape, revealing both challenges and opportunities in the country’s evolving market dynamics.
