BSF Heroically Foils Illegal Smuggling: Bangladeshi National Apprehended in Shillong, Meghalaya
The Border Security Force (BSF) in Meghalaya successfully intercepted an illegal smuggling operation and detained a Bangladeshi national in Shillong. Acting on specific intelligence, BSF troops from Sector HQ Jowai apprehended Munna Islam, a 20-year-old resident of Kashpur, Senapara, Bangladesh, near Anjali Petrol Pump in Shillong. According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of BSF Meghalaya, Islam confessed to illegally crossing the Indo-Bangladesh border in August 2024. He cited political unrest in his home country and the search for better job opportunities in India as his motives. Post medical examination, he was handed over to the local police at Kench’s Trace Beat House Police Station in Shillong for further legal proceedings.
In another operation, BSF Meghalaya thwarted a separate smuggling attempt along the international border. The operation took place in Baghmara, South Garo Hills, and Dawki, East Khasi Hills, resulting in the seizure of contraband valued at Rs 3.74 lakh. The confiscated items included fish, vacuum flasks, blankets, garlic, biri, and various edible goods, intended for illegal transport into Bangladesh. The PRO clarified that all seized goods have been transferred to the customs office for detailed investigation and subsequent legal action.
These successful operations reflect the BSF’s continued vigilance and commitment to curbing illegal activities along the Indo-Bangladesh border, deterring smuggling networks and ensuring regional security.
