Urgent Call for Justice: Massive Manipur Protest Demands AFSPA Repeal on Human Rights Day
In Imphal, thousands took to the streets on International Human Rights Day to protest against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), demanding its repeal due to allegations of human rights violations. The rally, organized by five civil society groups, including the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) and the Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF), began at Thangmeiband and concluded at Khuman Lampak in Imphal East. Participants from various segments of society, such as students, activists, and local community leaders, joined the demonstration to emphasize a unified call for justice and the protection of human rights.
Speakers at the event criticized AFSPA for granting excessive powers to the armed forces, which they argue fosters impunity and deepens community mistrust. The protest was marked by slogans like “repeal AFSPA” and “self-determination is our right,” reflecting the public’s demand for a peaceful and rights-respecting governance approach.
The Centre reimposed AFSPA in Manipur last November, citing ongoing ethnic violence and declaring the entire state as “disturbed” to facilitate security operations. Protesters argue that the act perpetuates unrest and have accused it of undermining fundamental human rights and allowing for continued human rights abuses across the region. Banners and placards reflected these sentiments, calling for AFSPA’s complete withdrawal not only from Manipur but from other northeastern states.
The gathering underscored a strong community commitment to achieving justice and respect for human dignity amidst ongoing challenges, presenting a powerful message against divisive measures and urging for an end to prolonged violence that has affected countless civilians in the region.
