Empowering Change: Transformative Insights on Human Rights and Gender Equality from Arunachal Workshop
On December 10, Government Upper Primary School, ESS Sector, Itanagar, hosted a significant workshop on Human Rights Day. Organized by the Arunachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority (APSLSA), in partnership with the Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Welfare Society (APWWS) and Bodhana NGO, the event delved into key issues such as gender-based violence, child-focused legal services, marriage registration, and various NALSA schemes.
Advocate Kamin Danggen from APSLSA delivered a compelling session addressing pivotal legal topics. These included NALSA’s services for senior citizens, support for disaster victims, and efforts toward poverty alleviation. Danggen also underscored the necessity of marriage registration and highlighted the resources available through the National Legal Helpline (15100).
APWWS President Advocate Kani Nada Maling focused on safeguarding vulnerable demographics, referencing crucial legislation such as the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Juvenile Justice Act, and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.
Adding an engaging dimension, the Bodhana team staged a live skit, vividly portraying human rights challenges faced by diverse genders, including the transgender community. Students were involved in an insightful art activity designed to challenge gender stereotypes and foster inclusivity.
The workshop also featured valuable contributions from Advocates Terji Gamlin and Iken Ado, who provided intricate perspectives on both legal frameworks and broader societal issues.
Commending the innovative nature of the event, Nang Khema Khamhoo, head teacher of the school, noted the workshop’s educational impact. The program attracted 254 participants, comprising students, faculty, APWWS members, and personnel from the One Stop Centre, Itanagar. Among the distinguished attendees was Keter Bagra, the undersecretary of the Arunachal Pradesh State Human Rights Commission.
This collaborative effort not only highlighted significant legal protections but also aimed to foster a greater understanding of human rights among a diverse audience.
