The recent collapse of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime presents Israel with both challenges and opportunities. Concerns about regional instability and potential spillover into Israeli territory are met with the prospect of disrupting Iran’s weapons supply to Hezbollah via Syria. In response to the Syrian army’s withdrawal, Israeli forces have temporarily seized control of a demilitarized buffer zone established in 1974, according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
