Shocking Seat-Blocking Scam Unveiled: Bengaluru Police Crack Down on Top Engineering Colleges
Bengaluru police have issued notices to three prominent engineering colleges—BMS Engineering College, Akash Institute of Engineering, and New Horizon College of Engineering—in connection with an alleged seat-blocking scam. This scheme reportedly involved converting government seats into management-quota seats, which were then sold for upwards of Rs 30 lakh. Integral to this scam were agents who assisted the colleges.
The Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) filed a complaint on November 13, revealing that the login credentials of 52 candidates were unlawfully accessed to block government-quota seats at these institutions. The investigation has further uncovered that 2,625 students did not claim seats they had selected, despite participating in all three rounds of counseling sessions.
Higher Education Minister M C Sudhakar reported vacant government seats, which include 92 at BMS College of Engineering, 82 at Akash Institute of Technology, and 52 at New Horizon College of Engineering, among others.
Ten individuals have been arrested in connection with this scam, including B S Avinash, 36, an outsourced KEA employee believed to be the mastermind behind the operation. Other key figures, such as Tilak R G, 60, and Naushad Alam, 42, are currently being held in four-day police custody. This fraudulent activity is said to have been ongoing for eight years.
Authorities are rigorously investigating this breach of trust and systemic manipulation within the higher education system, committed to bringing justice and restoring credibility to the counseling process.
