Countdown to History: Thrilling Preparations for India’s First Uncrewed Gaganyaan Space Flight by Year-End
Preparations are underway for the highly anticipated Gaganyaan mission, as India aims for its first uncrewed flight. Key components, including the crew escape system and propulsion systems of the human-rated launch vehicle, have been delivered to Sriharikota, and the integration of orbital module systems is nearing completion. This initial uncrewed mission is slated for launch by the end of 2024, followed by additional uncrewed missions in Q3 2025 and Q1 2026, as stated by the Minister of State for Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh, in Parliament.
Astronaut training is progressing, with participants completing two of three semesters of the India segment. The first crewed mission is aimed for the fourth quarter of 2026. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully “human rated” its LVM3 launch vehicle, incorporating redundancies to ensure safe human spaceflight. All stages—solid, liquid, and cryogenic—have undergone rigorous testing, and the cryogenic engine’s fluid mock-up filling trials are complete.
The Crew Escape System, crucial for astronaut safety during emergencies, was tested last year at a height of 17 km using a single-stage rocket. The system designated for the first unmanned flight is now ready and positioned at the launch complex. The crew module, meant to carry astronauts, and the service module, designed to support them, are being integrated into the orbital module.
ISRO has operationalized essential ground infrastructure, including the orbital module preparation facility and the astronaut training facility. The mission control center is nearing completion, alongside a ground station network for spacecraft tracking. In a collaborative effort, ISRO and the European Space Agency have signed a technical implementation plan to provide ground support during the Gaganyaan mission.
These developments mark significant progress as India gears up for its ambitious venture into human spaceflight, reflecting a milestone in its space exploration capabilities.
