Urgent Plea for Justice: Manipur’s Civil Societies Demand Immediate End to Harmful Internet Suspension

The Federation of Civil Societies Manipur (FOCS) has raised serious concerns about the extended internet suspension in the state, urging authorities to reconsider the ban due to the internet’s vital role in everyday life. This suspension followed a tragic incident in the Borebekra Sub-Division of Jiribam District on November 11, where six individuals, including three women and three minors, were brutally killed, allegedly by suspected Kuki militants. In response, state authorities aimed to prevent the spread of misinformation by halting internet services.

FOCS has underscored the severe ramifications of this blackout on both the economic and social domains in Manipur. According to their press release, the lack of internet access disrupts more than just personal communication. It significantly hinders businesses and professional activities that depend on online connections for effective communication, financial transactions, and general operations. Local entrepreneurs, professionals, and business owners have faced considerable inconveniences, impacting their ability to function and innovate.

Moreover, FOCS highlighted that the internet ban has exacerbated existing social and economic challenges in Manipur, particularly affecting crucial sectors like education, healthcare, and trade.
