Empowering Dreams: NE’s ‘Lakshmis’ Weaving Heritage with Passion and Purpose

Women from various Northeastern states of India, including Meghalaya, took the spotlight at the ‘Ashtalakshmi 2024’ event. This celebration underscored their dedication to preserving the region’s rich handloom and handicraft traditions. Amid personal and societal challenges, these women are forging a path of empowerment by blending heritage with innovation, contributing to economic independence and showcasing how tradition can drive change.

In Meghalaya, Cecilia Wanlang, 51, exemplifies this spirit. Overcoming early hardships, she joined a Self-Help Group (SHG) and revived handloom weaving—a family tradition—specializing in Eri silk, a cultural mainstay. Her intricate Ryndia fabrics in heritage colors financially and emotionally empower her community, promoting sustainable livelihoods.

From Manipur, Kongam Romicha champions the preservation of traditional textiles, notably the GI-tagged Wangkhei Phee, a handwoven fabric of cultural and ceremonial significance. Her dedication ensures the survival of Manipur’s textile tradition and earned her the National Merit Award in 2017-18.

Tripura’s Sanchita Debnath has become a beacon for bamboo craft, empowering women in her community by teaching bamboo weaving skills. Her initiative not only preserves this traditional art form but also creates economic opportunities, thus uplifting her community.

In Mizoram, Irene Chhangte, 46, collaborates with rural women to weave textiles reflecting Mizoram’s cultural richness under her venture ‘Weave Me More Dreams.’ By combining traditional techniques with modern designs, she has expanded market access and empowered artisans through fair wages and skill development.

These women, pioneers of change, demonstrate how cultural preservation can fuel economic growth and empowerment. Their stories serve as an inspiration, highlighting the potential of tradition and entrepreneurship.

The inaugural Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav, held from December 6 to 8 at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, Delhi, showcased Northeast India’s vibrant textile sector, tourism, traditional craftsmanship, and GI-tagged products, aiming to honor and advance the region’s cultural diversity annually.
