Urgent: Border Guard Bangladesh Halts Temple Renovation, Fueling Tensions – Shocking News from Guwahati
In Silchar’s Sribhumi district, an incident occurred on Thursday involving the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), who halted the renovation of a temple along the India-Bangladesh border. The temple, a Manasa temple situated near the Kushiyara river, has been in poor condition. The Assam government recently allotted Rs 3 lakh for its renovation, prompting work to start that day. However, BGB personnel, arriving by speedboat from the Jakiganj point in Bangladesh’s Sylhet division, demanded a stop to the renovation, citing concerns amidst ongoing regional tensions.
The situation led to a discussion between BGB and India’s Border Security Force (BSF). A commandant-level flag meeting was convened at the border point the same evening to address the issue. BSF officials clarified that the temple renovation was unrelated to current India-Bangladesh tensions, emphasizing that it involved refurbishing an existing structure. After deliberations, both sides resolved the matter, and BSF officials authorized the continuation of the renovation.
The Sribhumi district shares a 94-kilometer border with Bangladesh, 43 kilometers of which are riverine, while an additional four-kilometer stretch in Sribhumi town remains unfenced. Despite the initial halt, the temple authorities can now proceed with the renovation, ensuring the historical site’s preservation in this sensitive border region.
