In a recent development, the National People’s Party (NPP) has openly challenged the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) to abandon issuing demands from afar and instead participate in the electoral process. This comes in response to HNLC’s call for equal political representation and ministerial roles for Khasi and Jaintia MLAs, alongside a rotational chief minister system to ensure fair leadership distribution among Meghalaya’s communities.
Cabinet Minister and NPP leader, Ampareen Lyngdoh, questioned the legitimacy of HNLC’s stance, urging the group to step out of the shadows and engage directly in politics if they indeed support any political party. “You cannot decide from the jungle what happens in the government,” Lyngdoh stated, emphasizing the importance of contesting elections to gain a credible platform for their opinions.
Lyngdoh criticized the issuance of divisive diktats from HNLC, calling it a “communal mindset” that could fuel further division. She stressed the need for collective effort against oppression, cautioning against repeating the unrest seen in ethnic conflicts like those in Manipur. “Do you want to see something like that?” she asked, pointing to the disastrous effects such divides can cause.
Highlighting the NPP’s dedication as a pan-Meghalaya party, Lyngdoh affirmed the party’s commitment to inclusivity and respect for all religions and communities, with the primary goal of amplifying the state’s needs to the Government of India. She underscored the significance of Meghalaya’s coalition politics, urging not to disrupt the harmony that has long been a hallmark of the state’s political landscape.
As Meghalaya navigates its political challenges, the NPP remains steadfast in advocating for unity and equitable representation, urging groups like the HNLC to bring their voices to the democratic arena.
