Breaking: Orange Shakes Up TV with Bold Decision to Drop Disney Channels on January 1, 2025!
Disney Channels Bid Farewell to Orange TV: An Entertaining Shake-Up
In the latest entertainment industry twist, Disney has decided to part ways with Canal+, prompting a significant shake-up for Orange TV subscribers. Following the end of their distribution agreement, five beloved Disney channels, including Disney Channel, Disney Junior, National Geographic, and National Geographic Wild, will vanish from Orange TV on December 31, 2024. This decision, driven by the contract’s expiration, hits not just Orange but also other providers like Free, leaving devoted fans with reduced viewing options.
This change is rooted in late 2019 when Canal+ struck an exclusive deal with Disney ahead of Disney+’s French debut. The agreement forged Disney’s path onto Canal+, prioritizing Disney movies for Canal+ broadcasts, and included fan-favorite channels in its mix. As this contract nears its end in December, the impending channel blackout leaves just enough time to relish a last holiday season binge, unless a new deal magically materializes.
Orange subscribers, however, face a paradox: fewer channels but unchanged subscription fees. The Famille by Canal package still costs 5 euros monthly, despite shrinking from 43 to 37 channels as the New Year looms. Those yearning for Disney content will find their salvation solely through Disney+, the entertainment giant’s flagship streaming service.
Disney’s strategic pivot aligns with a broader industry shift towards direct-to-consumer models. By pulling these channels, Disney underscores its commitment to Disney+, possibly steering subscribers away from traditional channels altogether. This maneuver aims to up the ante in the competitive media landscape. Moreover, Disney, Marvel, or Pixar movies will no longer grace Canal+ screens six months post-theater release. Instead, viewers now face a 17-month post-release wait, adhering to media chronology rules.
In essence, this move shifts the entertainment landscape, urging viewers to embrace streaming as the new frontier in a rapidly evolving media world.
