Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma extended the scope of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, originally established in 2021, to include a state-wide prohibition on beef consumption in hotels, restaurants, and at public gatherings. This law had primarily focused on limiting cattle slaughter, but the recent amendment aims to curb beef consumption in broader public areas. Sarma clarified that while the original law restricted beef consumption only near temples, the new measure would apply across the entire state, prohibiting beef from being served in public venues.
In the aftermath of this announcement, Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed criticized the government, accusing it of aligning with the ideals of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and infringing upon constitutional rights. Ahmed argued that the Indian Constitution guarantees citizens the freedom to choose their diet and attire, and he condemned the move as being discriminatory against Muslims, lower-caste Hindus, and other marginalized communities.
