Exciting Boost for Sikkim Tourism: Thrilling Rs 165 Crore Investment for Enchanting New Projects
Sikkim stands to benefit significantly from two pivotal tourism infrastructure projects, part of the Government of India’s substantial Rs 3,295 crore initiative aimed at enhancing tourist destinations across 23 states. These projects, financed under the Scheme of Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI), are designed to elevate tourism by establishing state-of-the-art facilities and promoting local heritage.
The first major venture is the development of a Skywalk in South Sikkim at Bhaleydunga, Yangang, Namchi. With an allocated budget of Rs 97.37 crore, this ambitious project features a 240-metre-long glass-bottom Skywalk located at an altitude of 3,200 meters. Accessible via a 3.5-kilometre ropeway, visitors will be treated to breathtaking vistas of the Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary and Bhaleydunga Peak. In addition to the Skywalk, the project includes a funicular and supportive amenities, aiming to generate 61 local employment opportunities. This initiative seeks to establish Sikkim as a premier eco-tourism hub, capitalizing on the region’s natural beauty.
The second project focuses on enhancing infrastructure at Nathula Pass, a critical point on the India-China border. With a budget of Rs 68.19 crore, this development aims to alleviate congestion and enrich the tourist experience by integrating additional parking, tourist information centres, and leisure facilities. It is projected to create around 30 local jobs, thereby supporting the increasing influx of tourists to this strategic location.
Collectively, these investments are poised to invigorate Sikkim’s tourism sector, increasing its allure as an eco-tourism destination while fostering sustainable economic growth for local communities. By promoting innovative infrastructure and embracing the rich local culture, Sikkim is well-positioned to enhance its standing on the global tourism map.
