Urgent Call for Action: Growing Demands to Dismantle Militants in Manipur Amidst Escalating Violence
Imphal: The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), which represents various Meitei civil society organizations, has urged the central government to strengthen security along the Indo-Myanmar border and dismantle the infrastructure of armed militant groups. In a statement issued on Tuesday, COCOMI highlighted the need for decisive action to secure the border, tackle illegal activities such as poppy cultivation, arms smuggling, and drug trafficking, and restore demographic balance in Manipur.
COCOMI has requested transparency in investigations concerning alleged collusion between security forces and Kuki armed groups. The organization attributes the ongoing crisis in Manipur to “Kuki aggression,” claiming that the India-Myanmar border has been deliberately mismanaged. The central and state governments have previously stated that infiltration from Myanmar is a major factor contributing to the violence between the valley-based Meitei community and the Kuki tribes in the hill districts.
Ethnic clashes between these two communities have resulted in recurring violence in Manipur since May of the previous year, causing at least 258 deaths and rendering thousands homeless. COCOMI’s call for a comprehensive strategy aims to address these challenges and bring peace to the region.
