Urgent: Manipur Government Extends Internet Suspension Sparking Outrage Amid Law and Order Crisis

In light of ongoing concerns about the state’s law and order situation, the Manipur government has prolonged the suspension of mobile internet and data services across nine districts. This action, originally initiated on November 23, 2024, aims to curb the potential misuse of social media platforms for spreading hate speech and inflammatory content that could incite public disorder.

The districts affected by this suspension are Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, Jiribam, and Pherzawl. While the ban was initially scheduled to end at 5:15 PM on December 1, 2024, it has now been extended to December 3, 2024, at the same time. This measure is part of efforts under the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017, to maintain public safety and harmony.

While broadband services like ILL and FTTH remain operational, they do so under certain conditions specified in earlier orders from November 18, 2024. The government has stated that exemptions from the mobile internet suspension could be granted on a case-by-case basis.

Authorities have emphasized that these preventive orders are necessary given the urgency of the situation. Compliance with the directives is mandatory, and any violations will be met with legal consequences.
