Shocking Revelation: Punjab’s Probe Unmasks Infamous Chairman Bhai Jaan in Global Drug Nexus | Chandigarh News

An investigation by Punjab police has uncovered an international drug trafficking network connecting Pakistan, Italy, Dubai, and Amritsar. This nexus is responsible for smuggling contraband into Punjab, exacerbated by both local and global challenges. Smugglers in India have been sending empty drones to Pakistan, which return laden with drugs. The police, employing advanced surveillance techniques, have identified key players in this operation.

Shafqat Hussain Butt, a Lahore-based smuggling kingpin, is heavily involved in using drones to send drugs across the India-Pakistan border, particularly large hexacopters capable of carrying significant loads. Reports suggest his connections with Pakistani intelligence and his influential political ties bolster his undertakings. Another prominent figure, Haji, operates from Karachi, using boats and containers to transport heroin across the Jammu and Kashmir International Border.

In Dubai, a notorious smuggler known as Bhai Jaan orchestrates drug shipments and liaises with Indian smugglers like Simranjit Singh Sandhu in Italy and Tanvir Singh Bedi in Australia. Sandhu, originating from Amritsar, controls operations from Italy. Investigations have also highlighted a network of approximately 150 Pakistani and 40 Indian smugglers residing abroad, mainly in the US, Canada, Australia, and Europe, who are pivotal in the drug trade targeting Punjab.

The Punjab police have conducted a forensic analysis of seized drones, unveiling their entire flight paths and mapping hotspots along the border. The increased use of smaller drones, possibly due to economic reasons, poses new challenges as drug consignments are frequently being sent through riverine gaps along Punjab’s 553-km international border where fencing is scarce.

Punjab’s DGP, Gaurav Yadav, emphasizes the layered structure of this trafficking network, which includes leaders operating abroad and lower-tier couriers within India. The state police, in coordination with the BSF, are intensifying surveillance to curtail this drug menace.
