Empowering Change: How Stronger Laws Can End the Tragic Rape Menace – Insights from TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee | Kolkata News
Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), addressed a doctors’ convention in Diamond Harbour, stressing the need for a strong legal framework to combat rape in India. Speaking after the tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College, Banerjee condemned the incident, urging capital punishment for those responsible. He criticized the Central government’s lack of action and called for the immediate implementation of a stringent law through an ordinance. Banerjee highlighted the delay in the Aparajita Woman and Child Bill’s approval, noting its potential impact on combating crime nationwide. He expressed his intent to introduce a private member’s bill if the President does not assent.
Banerjee also launched the Sebaashray health camp program, aiming to offer free health services across seven constituencies in 75 days, starting January 2. Approximately 1,200 doctors have committed to these camps, with the initiative expected to culminate in 5,000 doctors convening in Kolkata by April.
The TMC leader commended the ongoing collaboration between doctors and the government in enhancing public healthcare, emphasizing the significance of uninterrupted medical services to prevent patient fatalities.
Reflecting on his Diamond Harbour COVID-19 initiative, Banerjee assured that the decade-long project’s achievements are documented in his book, “Nishobdo Biplob.” This initiative, known as the DH model, had previously drawn media attention.
Overall, Banerjee’s remarks reinforced his commitment to stringent legal reforms against violent crimes and comprehensive healthcare initiatives, showcasing TMC’s proactive stance on these pressing issues.
