Desperate Plea: Locals and Devoted Wife Lead Heartfelt Protests Over Missing Man from Army Camp in Manipur
Tensions are running high in Manipur’s Kanto Sabal, Imphal West, due to the mysterious disappearance of Laishram Kamal Babu from a nearby Army camp. The incident, now a week old, has sparked a wave of protests led by local women, demanding the Indian Army’s accountability. Heading these protests is Babu’s wife, Akoijam Ningol Laishram Ongbi Belarani, who has vowed to remain at the Army camp until her husband is safely returned.
The demonstrators are voicing frustration over the Army’s perceived inaction, with slogans urging them to vacate the area if unable to locate Babu. Belarani shared her distressing discovery of her husband’s disappearance on November 25, noting that his phone was unreachable, which led her to learn from a colleague that he was missing. She made an emotional plea to the Army to prioritize her husband’s safe return.
In response to the mounting pressure, the Army has intensified search operations for Babu, who was employed as a work supervisor by a contractor with the Military Engineering Services at the Leimakhong military station. Meanwhile, Manipur’s Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh, has urged the Army to assume accountability and expedite the rescue efforts.
An FIR has been lodged with the Sekmai police station, and the Joint Action Committee (JAC) has issued an ultimatum, demanding swift action from the authorities to trace and rescue Babu. Protests continue throughout the Imphal valley, escalating the urgency for a resolution.
The case places the Army and local authorities under increasing scrutiny to deliver answers and secure Babu’s safe return. The unfolding tensions underscore the palpable anxiety and demand for justice among the local populace, as the search efforts for Kamal Babu persist amidst growing cries for accountability.
