India’s capital, New Delhi, is again under scrutiny due to its hazardous air pollution levels, which have soared to “severe plus” conditions. Air quality readings have hit 50 times above the World Health Organization’s safe limits, peaking at an Air Quality Index of 491 out of 500. This has severely disrupted visibility, affecting flights and train operations. The chronic issue of air pollution in North India poses a significant risk, contributing to millions of premature deaths and escalating health problems such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The main culprits include industrial emissions, vehicle exhausts, agricultural burning, and reliance on coal and firewood.
Despite efforts like the transition to cleaner fuel in public transportation and increased access to LPG in households, these strategies have fallen short. The challenge is aggravated by the onset of winter, which traps pollutants closer to the ground, although this is fundamentally a man-made crisis. The government has historically failed to implement lasting solutions, resorting instead to emergency measures reminiscent of pandemic lockdowns.
The deeper issue is the perception of air pollution as a mere local challenge, when in fact it affects half a billion people across the Subcontinent, from Pakistan through India to Bangladesh. Recognizing this as a shared regional crisis could pave the way for South Asian collaborative efforts to promote environmental health, transcending historical conflicts. The opportunity exists for countries to unite over this pressing matter, fostering cross-border cooperation to effectively address this critical issue.
Addressing air pollution across the Subcontinent is pivotal, not just for the sake of public health but also as an avenue for regional solidarity and international cooperation, reminding us that environmental boundaries do not align with political ones.
