Heartfelt Journey: Finding Peace in the Heart of Border Conflicts
Guwahati, Nov 30: Filmmaker Jadumoni Dutta explores the profound impact of border conflicts with his poignant film “Juiphool (Orange and Purple),” inspired by real events along the Assam-Nagaland border. Screened at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa within the Indian Panorama section, the film also competed for the esteemed ICFT-UNESCO Gandhi Peace Medal. “Juiphool” beautifully captures the shared human experiences on both sides of the border through the story of two mothers, Lakhimi and Rengma.
Lakhimi, an Assamese widow expecting a child, forms a secret bond with Rengma, a Naga woman struggling with miscarriages. Despite the backdrop of conflict, their friendship testifies to the resilience and unity that transcend arbitrary divisions. However, their relationship raises suspicions in their tense village, leading to conflict. The title “Juiphool” metaphorically symbolizes a “flower of fire,” with its orange and purple hues representing the protagonists.
Dutta believes in the power of cinema to foster peace, harmony, and coexistence—a vision that aligns with the ICFT-UNESCO Gandhi Peace Medal’s commitment to celebrating films infused with Gandhian values of peace, tolerance, and non-violence. Recognizing the importance of the film’s international showcase, Dutta is gratified that “Juiphool” resonates with audiences across borders, embodying the notion that our shared humanity surpasses geographic lines.
The making of “Juiphool” brought together a skilled team, led by Dutta, who directed and produced the film. The emotive script by Nizara Rajkumari, combined with Shibrani Kalita, Bendang Meren Ao, and other talented actors, brought the story to life. The film’s evocative cinematography by Jiten Boro, and an expressive background score by Rajiv Kashyap, further enriched this compelling cinematic experience. Through “Juiphool,” Dutta emphasizes that while forces thrive on division, the spirit of brotherhood prevails.
