Fiery Clash: Manipur and Mizoram CMs Exchange Sharp Words After Lalduhoma’s Bold Remark Against Biren Singh
The Manipur government has criticized Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma over his remarks, urging him to act with greater “statesmanship” and refrain from inciting “hatred and division.” This response follows Lalduhoma’s interview with the Hindustan Times, where he labeled Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh a liability and suggested the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur. Lalduhoma also criticized the Indo-Myanmar border fencing and discussed the potential militarization in Manipur and calls for disarming armed groups.
The Manipur government strongly opposed these comments, alleging that Mizoram resists efforts by the central government to enhance border security to curb illegal activities. Manipur cited the “greater agenda” of creating a Kuki-Chin Christian nation by altering regional demographics and opposed any fragmentation of Northeast India.
Manipur’s administration contended that the current turmoil is due to illegal immigrants from Myanmar, whose poppy-driven economy has suffered under Singh’s ‘War on Drugs.’ They dismissed accusations of anti-tribal policies, alleging that Lalduhoma’s portrayal was misleading. While emphasizing its long history and culture, Manipur questioned Lalduhoma’s understanding of the situation in Kuki-dominated areas, reflecting on Mizoram’s directives to Myanmar nationals regarding land purchases.
Further, Manipur claimed substantial success in its drug eradication efforts, positioning Mizoram as the new hotspot for illicit trade. The government highlighted its ongoing actions to restore peace, including supporting over 60,000 individuals in relief camps and recovering stolen arms.
The statement warned against foreign agendas promoting separatism and illegal migrant relocation from Mizoram to Manipur. It concluded by urging Lalduhoma to promote harmony rather than division and reaffirmed Manipur’s commitment to opposing divisive efforts. The Mizoram government did not immediately comment on Manipur’s statement.
