Urgent: Internet Suspension Extended in Nine Manipur Districts Sparks Concern
The Manipur government has extended the suspension of mobile internet services for an additional two days in nine districts, with the ban now lasting until December 1. According to a statement from the state’s home department, the decision was made following a review of the current law and order situation. This extended suspension affects the districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Kakching, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Pherzawl, and Jiribam.
The move aims to curb the spread of potentially inflammatory content by anti-social elements that could exacerbate the ongoing unrest in the region. This preventive measure was initially implemented following a surge in violence across the northeastern state on November 16. The suspension was first applied for two days and has since been repeatedly extended as tensions remain high.
Importantly, the suspension does not affect broadband internet services via Internet Leased Line (ILL) or Fiber to the Home (FTTH), which were conditionally reinstated after an earlier government directive on November 18, 2024. The government may also issue specific exemptions on a case-by-case basis.
Meanwhile, the Committee on Tribes Union (CoTU) has announced a 12-hour total shutdown in Kangpokpi on November 30, adding a layer of complexity to the region’s dynamic situation. Local authorities and residents are urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security measures during this period.
The continued internet suspension highlights the government’s prioritization of maintaining public order amidst ongoing challenges.
