Frustration Grows as Manipur’s Tripartite Talks on New District Creation Reach an Inconclusive Standstill
The tripartite negotiations involving the Central government, Manipur government, and the United Naga Council (UNC) concluded without a resolution on Friday, as the parties debated the UNC’s demand to reverse the creation of seven new districts in Manipur. This meeting, held at Senapati District Headquarters, focused on the state government’s controversial decision from December 8, 2016. The UNC is pushing for the rollback of these newly established entities, citing them as an arbitrary move.
In a joint statement, it was revealed that while the Manipur government representatives couldn’t present a definitive proposal due to unspecified challenges, the UNC firmly criticized this lack of progress. They demanded that a concrete proposal be furnished at the next round of discussions. Despite the setback, the talks unfolded in a cordial environment, with all parties agreeing to continue discussions consistently to achieve a political solution within a specified timeframe.
Looking ahead, the negotiators have scheduled the next round of discussions for the last week of January at Senapati district headquarters. This upcoming meeting is anticipated to address the UNC’s demands more directly, as the parties aim for a resolution that balances administrative decision-making and the region’s socio-political landscape.
