Unlocking the Future: An Inspiring Forum on the Eastern Himalayas’ Third Pole Legacy
The 12th annual Eastern Himalayan Naturenomics Forum, hosted by the Balipara Foundation in Guwahati, Assam, focused on the critical future of the Third Pole and the Eastern Himalayas. This gathering underscored the urgent need to address climate change to secure the region’s livelihoods. The forum brought together 60 leaders from 15 countries to discuss the essential role of the Third Pole in regulating climate and water sources for billions across South and Southeast Asia, emphasizing the significance of its glaciers.
The two-day event gathered representatives from global and national corporations, academic experts, policymakers, and the conservation sector. Discussions centered on sustainability and environmental issues in the Eastern Himalayas. Prominent voices highlighted a pathway towards a regenerative economy to safeguard these fragile ecosystems. A major focus was placed on evaluating ecosystems to attract business investments and considering the environmental costs, thereby aiding in better decision-making by businesses and policymakers.
Panels delved into the renewable energy transition, watershed management, sustainable agriculture, eradication of rural plastic waste, and landscape-level protection of Asian elephants. Guwahati Wildlife Division’s divisional forest officer, Pasupuleti Monica Kishore, asserted the need for a shift in perspective, emphasizing human responsibility in conserving ecosystems rather than solely creating habitats for elephants.
The forum culminated with the Balipara Foundation Awards, recognizing 14 community leaders, scientists, and conservationists committed to preserving the biocultural heritage of the Eastern Himalayas. This included efforts across notable sites, such as Manipur’s Loktak Lake, Assam’s Deepor Beel, Bhutan’s national parks, and the Sundarbans. These awards celebrated significant achievements in environmental and community conservation, reinforcing the necessity for concerted action in the region.
