Urgent Plea for Safety: NEHU VC Shukla Demands Central Security for Safe Return to Meghalaya Campus
Prabha Shankar Shukla, the Vice-Chancellor of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Meghalaya, has requested security support from the Central government to ensure his safe return to campus on December 2, citing concerns for his safety. Currently on ‘leave,’ Shukla has also called on the government to address the rising unrest within the university.
In a letter to the Principal Secretary of Higher Education, Shukla detailed the severe disruptions caused by protests led by the NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the NEHU Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA), under Prof. Lakhon Kma. The situation escalated earlier this month when students launched a hunger strike, which has since evolved into a sit-in protest. On November 6, students further intensified their demands by locking down the university, calling for the resignation of Shukla, the registrar, and other university officials.
Shukla reported that NEHUTA disrupted the 113th Academic Council meeting and stormed administrative offices, locking out officials and issuing threats. His office, in particular, was targeted with demands for dismissals.
Amid these tensions, Shukla stressed that university operations have effectively come to a halt, with faculty members unable to fulfill their duties due to a prevalent sense of fear and insecurity. The Vice-Chancellor’s appeal for intervention highlights the dire need for resolution to ensure the safety of faculty and the continuation of academic activities at NEHU.
