Unleash Joy at Hornbill Festival 2024: Nagaland Invites Global Partners for an Unforgettable Cultural Extravaganza
The 25th Hornbill Festival in Nagaland is slated to commence on December 1, spanning 10 days of cultural festivities. This year’s event boasts partnerships with Wales, the US, Japan, and Peru, alongside Indian states Sikkim and Telangana, as announced by Nagaland’s Tourism Minister, Temjen Imna Along. Hosted at the scenic Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, the festival aims to celebrate and preserve Nagaland’s rich cultural heritage.
Dubbed the “festival of festivals,” the Hornbill Festival draws international visitors keen to experience Nagaland’s vibrant traditions, cuisine, arts, and crafts. Key events include business roundtables, cultural exhibitions, and tourism promotions, attracting dignitaries such as Governor La Ganesan and Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio at the inaugural ceremony.
Significant economic benefits are anticipated from the state’s Rs 100 crore investment, including infrastructure upgrades like increasing the main arena’s seating to 5,000 through prefab structures. Despite being a dry state, the government will permit the sale of Indian-made liquor exclusively at Kisama, aligning with prohibition laws.
The festival will see the return of the Hornbill Parade, merged with the Kohima Night Bazaar on December 7, as per Chief Minister’s advisor, Abu Metha. Multiple Nagaland districts, including Dimapur and Wokha, will host additional music and cultural events. The festival is expected to generate around Rs 200 crore in economic activity, benefiting local businesses and promoting environmental sustainability by minimizing plastic waste.
Security measures are robust, with a two-tier arrangement to maintain peace, involving tourist police and regulation of arms visibility. Transportation efforts include 60 shuttle buses for visitor convenience and traffic decongestion strategies are in place. This festival not only showcases Nagaland’s culture but also serves as a global platform for dialogue and economic exchange.
