Heartfelt Plea: Assam-Agartala Highway Blocked by Bru Community in a Powerful Stand for Resettlement Promises
In a significant development in Tripura, over 100 Bru or Reang individuals have blockaded the Assam-Agartala National Highway (NH-08), demanding that the government honors its commitments regarding their resettlement. Since early morning, the protesters have caused a major traffic congestion on this crucial highway, severely impacting travel and transport in the region.
The Bru community, resettled in 13 locations in Ambassa, Dhalai District, is advocating for the formation of new village committees and the allocation of promised agricultural land. According to a protester, the government had assured each family 5 hectares of agricultural land and the establishment of separate village committees as part of a previous agreement meant to facilitate their permanent settlement. However, while some families have received land, many remain without, fueling discontent within the community.
The protesters are adamant about continuing their blockade until their demands are met. Expressing their dissatisfaction, one demonstrator reiterated that these issues had been stipulated in the agreement but remained unfulfilled for the majority. “We have been requesting the formation of village committees for a long time, but nothing has been done yet,” he stated, noting that repeated appeals to the administration have yielded no response.
The blockade underscores mounting frustration within the Bru community, who feel neglected despite repeated assurances. Their actions today convey a powerful message to the authorities about the urgent need to address these grievances and honor previous commitments for a peaceful resolution.
As the situation unfolds, the Tripura administration faces increasing pressure to engage with the Bru community and resolve their long-standing issues, avoiding further disruption and ensuring a harmonious coexistence. The eyes of the region remain fixed on Ambassa, as both the protesters and the government navigate this critical juncture.
