Urgent Appeal: Rights Group Seeks UN Intervention in Heartbreaking Arrest of Beloved ISKCON Leader in Bangladesh
New Delhi: The Rights and Risks Analysis Group (RRAG) has lodged a formal complaint with the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, challenging the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a noted Hindu religious figure in Bangladesh. Brahmachari’s arrest on November 25th by Bangladeshi authorities came alongside charges of sedition and other alleged offenses. The RRAG contends that these accusations are politically driven and lack concrete evidence.
The arrest, reportedly instigated by a complaint from Md Firoz Khan, focuses on the placement of ISKCON flags over national flags during a protest. However, the RRAG maintains that there is no direct evidence linking Brahmachari to this act, labeling the charges as speculative. Suhas Chakma, Director of RRAG, pointed out that Brahmachari was apprehended without being summoned for questioning, highlighting a disregard for legal due process.
The RRAG underscores that Brahmachari’s detention is discriminatory, suggesting that it targets his religious beliefs and his significant role within Bangladesh’s Hindu community. In their complaint to the UN Working Group, the organization seeks an inquiry into the legality of his detention and a formal opinion on the matter.
The RRAG is calling upon the international community to intervene, emphasizing the need for swift action to protect Brahmachari’s rights. The case sheds light on broader concerns about religious freedom and potential political motivations behind legal actions in Bangladesh. By bringing the case to international attention, the RRAG aims to ensure not only the protection of Brahmachari’s rights but also to highlight the ongoing struggles of religious minorities in the region.
The situation underscores the complex interplay of politics and religion in Bangladesh, with implications for human rights and justice that demand careful international scrutiny and action.
