Shocking Breakthrough: Seven Arrested in Assam’s Wheat Theft Saga – Partial Recovery Sparks Hope!
Assam Police have arrested seven individuals in connection with the theft of 1,560 bags of wheat, valued at ₹32 lakh, which disappeared while being transported from Azara Railway Yard to Imphal, Manipur. The suspects include Shyamal Debnath, an alleged associate of the main mastermind, along with Md. Anuwar Uddin, Md. Sakir Alom, Md. Diluwar Hussain, Md. Rushmat Ali, Laxmi Kant Thathera, and Binoy Pathak.
The case was reported at Azara Police Station following an FIR filed by Dwipen Medhi from Paneri village on November 22, 2024. The wheat consignment, loaded on November 5, 2024, in trucks with registration numbers AS 02 DC-0139 and AS 31 C-1038, was initially delayed in Nagaon due to poor road conditions in Manipur. Resuming their journey, the trucks vanished, and the cargo was allegedly stolen, reportedly with assistance from the drivers.
Authorities have managed to recover about half of the stolen goods—approximately 780 bags—from Kuber Roller Flour Mill in Bokakhat. The trucks connected to the crime were seized in Margherita, Tinsukia district. Efforts continue to locate the remaining bags and apprehend 3-4 additional suspects believed to have been involved in the scheme.
This case underscores the challenges faced in safeguarding goods transit and reflects ongoing endeavors by law enforcement to solve such complex, multi-location crimes.
