Arunachal Pradesh Flash Floods: 1 Dead, 4 Missing After Heavy Rain
Torrential rain in Arunachal Pradesh during the night of June 23-24 triggered flash floods and landslides that killed one person, left four others missing and severed road links to six districts, district officials in Keyi Panyor said on Wednesday, June 24. Rescue and relief teams were deployed across the worst-hit areas as authorities worked to assess damage and locate survivors.
The flooding heavily affected areas around the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) project at Yazali Circle, causing widespread property damage. Officials said nearly 50 houses were hit by the deluge and that several stretches of key highways suffered major landslides, leaving remote communities isolated.
Keyi Panyor Superintendent of Police Angad Mehta said the body of 35-year-old Nirmala Gupta, a teacher at Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya (VKV) on the NEEPCO campus in Yazali, was recovered during ongoing search operations. Mehta added that teams called off work for the day and planned to resume the search on Thursday, June 25.
The Indian Air Force conducted aerial surveys to map the destruction and help locate stranded people, while a district police statement said large parts of Keyi Panyor and the neighbouring districts of Kamle, Kra Daadi, Kurung Kumey, Lower Subansiri and Upper Subansiri had been cut off by monsoon-related damage. A bridge linking East Kameng and Pakke Kessang districts also suffered damage, further disrupting connectivity.
Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police and local volunteers have launched extensive search operations to trace the missing, who include a 13-year-old child, officials said.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed concern over the situation and ordered officials in all 28 districts to remain prepared for monsoon emergencies. “While we cannot prevent natural calamities, preparedness is essential, especially during the monsoon season when Arunachal Pradesh experiences intense rainfall,” Khandu said, urging residents to cooperate with authorities and stay cautious as relief and recovery work continues.
