Rural Police Intensify Crackdown on Drug Traffickers: Triumph in the Battle for Community Safety
The Ernakulam Rural police have intensified efforts against drug trafficking as part of their ongoing Operation Clean, registering a significant increase in cases and arrests this year. Between January and October, 1,582 cases were filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, resulting in 1,739 arrests. The police confiscated approximately 200 kg of ganja, with Thadiyittaparambu alone accounting for 100 kg and 11 arrests. Additionally, about 2.50 kg of MDMA was seized, including a notable incident in June when Sarmeen Akhtar was apprehended at Aluva railway station with over 1 kg of MDMA hidden in a heater, valued at over ₹50 lakh.
Other significant seizures included 300 grams of MDMA from Kalady, resulting in three arrests, and 200 grams from Angamaly, with three suspects apprehended. On the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a special drive yielded 375 grams of MDMA and 13 ganja plants, leading to two arrests. The police also made a major heroin bust, recovering nearly 200 grams worth around ₹20 lakh from a group attempting to smuggle it in soap boxes.
Small quantities of hashish oil, brown sugar, methamphetamine, and ganja beedis were also seized. Notably, nine individuals were detained under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PITNDPS) Act. In addition to rigorous enforcement, the police are conducting social media campaigns to combat substance abuse, stated Vaibhav Saxena, the District Police Chief of Ernakulam Rural.
