Remarkable Railway Reforms: Transformative Safety Initiatives Spark 70% Plunge in Train Accidents Since 2014
Significant Decline in Train Accidents Due to Enhanced Railway Safety Measures: Ashwini Vaishnaw
In a significant advancement for railway safety, Union Minister for Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, reported a dramatic 70% reduction in train accidents since 2014. Addressing Lok Sabha, he noted a decrease in accidents from 135 in 2014-15 to 40 in 2023-24. This improvement is attributed to comprehensive safety measures, reducing the annual average accidents from 171 in 2004-14 to 68 in 2014-24.
Key innovations include a decrease in Accidents per Million Train Kilometer (APMTKM) from 0.11 in 2014-15 to 0.03 in 2023-24, reflecting a 73% enhancement. The introduction of Electrical/Electronic Interlocking Systems at 6,608 stations and the modernization of 11,053 level crossing gates have been pivotal. These systems eliminate human error and improve safety at critical transition points.
Additionally, the Kavach system, a cutting-edge safety protocol, has been implemented on 1,548 Route Kilometers in South Central and North Central Railway, with ongoing projects on the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah corridors. Supporting technologies include Vigilance Control Devices (VCD) on all locomotives and GPS-based Fog Safety Devices (FSD) to aid loco pilots in low-visibility conditions.
Retro-reflective sigma boards and advanced track structures with high Ultimate Tensile Strength rails and Prestressed Concrete Sleepers ensure enhanced safety and reliability. These measures underline the Railways’ commitment to integrating advanced technology and infrastructure to significantly elevate operational safety across India.
