On Thanksgiving 2024, various services and businesses will be affected. All federal and local government offices, including courts, postal services, the DMV, and libraries, will be closed. Most major retail chains will follow suit; for the fifth year running, Target will not open its doors, prioritizing employees’ time with family. Similarly, Walmart, Best Buy, Macy’s, Nordstrom, and Kohl’s will be closed, resuming operations on Black Friday.
Financial institutions will also observe the holiday, with banks remaining closed, though online banking and ATMs will still be operational. American stock exchanges, such as Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange, will halt trading for the day.
While the majority of grocery stores will adjust their hours or close early, a few will remain open, albeit with reduced hours. Stores under Albertsons Companies, including Safeway, Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, ACME, Vons, and Tom Thumb, will operate with adjusted schedules. Whole Foods will adopt a similar approach. However, Trader Joe’s, Aldi, Sam’s Club, and Costco will not open for the holiday. Shoppers are advised to confirm the exact opening hours of nearby stores.
Postal operations will be suspended, with the U.S. Postal Service shutting down for the day. Moreover, UPS and FedEx services will generally be closed, except for UPS Express Critical and FedEx Custom Critical services, while some UPS store locations may remain open.
