Shocking Move: Will Rahul Gandhi’s Citizenship Be Revoked? High Court Awaits Centre’s Critical Response
The Allahabad High Court has instructed the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to make a decision regarding a petition seeking the cancellation of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Indian citizenship due to alleged dual British citizenship. This directive comes from the Lucknow bench of the High Court, composed of Justices AR Masoodi and Subhash Vidyarthi, who addressed a public interest litigation (PIL) initiated by Karnataka BJP worker S. Vignesh Shishir. The petitioner is also calling for a CBI investigation into the matter.
Deputy Solicitor General of India reported that the MHA has received the petitioner’s representation. The hearing is scheduled for December 19. Additionally, the court instructed Additional Solicitor General SB Pandey to gather instructions from the MHA within three weeks and ensure their response is ready by the next hearing date.
Earlier, on November 6, the Delhi High Court was informed of a CBI probe initiated into this citizenship issue. The Delhi HC matter arose from a plea by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, who sought the MHA’s decision on his representation for revoking Gandhi’s Indian citizenship and a status report on this matter.
Shishir’s new plea follows a previous petition he withdrew in July, after which he submitted two new representations to the MHA. His current petition presses the court for action on these new submissions. The High Court clarified that its present concern is to confirm whether the central government has received Shishir’s representations and whether there is any proposed action or decision. The evolving legal proceedings hint at continuing political and judicial scrutiny regarding Gandhi’s citizenship status.
