Heartfelt Confession: Director Shoojit Sircar Opens Up on Irrfan’s Cancer Battle and Emotional Responsibility Towards Babil
Director Shoojit Sircar recently shared insights into his deep connection with the late actor Irrfan Khan, with whom he collaborated on the 2015 film “Piku.” In an interview with ETimes, Shoojit reflected on his friendship with Irrfan, especially during the actor’s battle with cancer. The filmmaker revealed he frequently talked to Irrfan during this challenging period, acknowledging that the situation was mentally overwhelming for the beloved actor. This personal experience partly inspired Shoojit’s latest film, “I Want To Talk,” which explores themes of resilience against mental health challenges in dire situations.
The newly released film received positive reviews upon its opening last week in theatres. It features Abhishek Bachchan as Arjun, a man facing life-changing surgery while dealing with complex family dynamics. The cast also includes Johny Lever, Ahilya Bamroo, and Banita Sandhu. Shoojit disclosed that the story’s premise stemmed from observing a friend who faced a major life challenge without surrendering, inspiring him to make a film focusing on mental perseverance.
Beyond remembering Irrfan, Shoojit expressed his sense of responsibility towards the actor’s son, Babil. He aims to guide and support Babil as he carves his path in the film industry. Following his father’s death in 2020 due to a neuroendocrine tumor, Babil made his acting debut in Anvita Dutt’s psychological drama “Qala.” Babil has since garnered acclaim for his work in the web series “The Railway Men” (2023), which features notable actors like Divyendu Sharma, Kay Kay Menon, and Madhavan.
Through this latest cinematic endeavor, Shoojit Sircar seeks to address the mental health struggles individuals face when confronted with severe life challenges, drawing from his personal experiences and those around him.
