Shockwaves at NU: Scandalous Allegations of Assault Rock Campus
On November 25, as Nagaland observed the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, an incident at Nagaland University’s Lumani campus shocked the academic community. A male professor was accused of assaulting a female colleague, leading to his detention by police after outraged students reportedly confronted him. An FIR was filed, and the university administration was notified of the situation.
The Zunheboto police confirmed the detention of the professor, although official details were limited. Public condemnation swiftly followed from two student organizations. The Nagaland University Research Scholars’ Forum (NURSF) accused the professor of both verbal abuse towards students and the physical assault of an assistant professor. They labeled his actions as violations of institutional norms and human dignity, highlighting a perceived pattern of intimidation and misconduct. NURSF demanded his immediate dismissal, citing him as a “grave threat” to the university environment.
Similarly, the Lotha Students’ Union (LSU) expressed anger, calling the incident a betrayal of trust and a breach of the university’s code of conduct. They warned that if the administration did not act within four days, legal measures would be pursued.
An anonymous university staff member provided further insight, alleging the professor had a history of erratic behavior, excusing it by claiming mental instability. The recent incident reportedly involved the professor verbally abusing Master’s degree students and physically attacking a female assistant professor who intervened. Allegedly, previous misconduct also occurred but went largely unreported.
The assaulted assistant professor confirmed that the university’s administration was addressing the issue, though attempts to reach university officials for comment were unsuccessful. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about maintaining a safe and respectful environment within the university.
