Visitor Numbers Surge at Sikkim Science Centre
GANGTOK: The Sikkim Science Centre in Namli near Ranipool has reported a significant increase in visitor numbers this year, as outlined in a recent press release. Established in 2008 through a partnership with the National Council of Science Museums and the Ministry of Culture, along with the State Science & Technology department, the center has seen a notable rise in popularity. Between April and October 2024, the center welcomed 3,181 visitors, more than double the 1,117 visitors recorded during the same period in 2023.
This surge is attributed to a strategic focus on networking with stakeholders, robust support from the Education department, improved facilities, active social media engagement, and personalized visitor experiences. The center’s array of interactive exhibits and educational offerings, such as its state-of-the-art digital planetarium, 3D film theatre, diverse science galleries, innovation hub, children’s activity corner, and expansive science park, are designed to provide hands-on exposure to scientific principles and practical applications.
The innovation hub, a cornerstone of the center’s success, has engaged 88 member schools by offering workshops on robotics, physical and life sciences, electronics, and computer programming. Additionally, career counseling and motivational sessions focusing on STEM disciplines have further enriched the center’s influence on students.
The center is open from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm, throughout the week, including weekends and holidays, but remains closed on Mondays. This schedule has facilitated greater visitor accessibility, contributing to the year’s impressive growth in attendance. The Sikkim Science Centre’s commitment to enhancing educational experiences through interactive and innovative programs underscores its role as a pivotal resource for science education in the region.
