Revolutionary City Surveillance: Unleashing the Power of Emotion with Face Recognition Cameras
In Shillong, the Integrated Control and Command Centre (ICCC) has introduced advanced surveillance with face recognition capabilities across the city. Vijay Kumar D, Commissioner and Secretary of the Urban Affairs Department, emphasized the ICCC’s role as the central hub for city management, emergency responses, and public assistance. The ICCC enhances situational awareness for civic officials by providing data-driven insights through citywide sensors and standardizes response protocols for recurring events and emergencies.
A network of 328 surveillance cameras forms part of the City Surveillance System, featuring 20 face recognition cameras. These cameras offer 24/7 monitoring and recording, supporting law enforcement with pre- and post-event information and fostering a safer urban environment. An Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) complements this, with 20 Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras located at key intersections to address traffic violations and improve city traffic flow.
The ICCC also manages the Solid Waste Management System by equipping 50 garbage trucks with GPS and deploying 200 smart bins. This system, using algorithm-based routing and biometric attendance, optimizes waste collection and disposal processes. Furthermore, free Wi-Fi hotspots will be established throughout the city to enhance connectivity for residents.
Additional features include emergency call boxes at 42 locations and a public address system at 58 points for emergency announcements. These technological advancements, along with the conversion of 700 street lights into smart lights to control lighting and reduce energy consumption, aim to boost public safety, particularly at night.
Moreover, the installation of 40 variable messaging displays (VMDs) provides a platform for disseminating traffic, situation, and public information citywide. Through these integrated systems, Shillong’s city operations are set to advance significantly, ensuring improved safety and efficiency.
