Empowered Leaders Unite for Urgent Climate Action in Guwahati: A Passionate Call to Defend Our Future
The 12th Eastern Himalayan Naturenomics Forum, hosted by the Balipara Foundation, commenced in Guwahati on November 25, 2024. This significant two-day event, taking place on November 26-27, assembles 80 influential leaders from 15 countries with a mission to explore urgent climate action and sustainable development strategies in the Eastern Himalaya and the Third Pole.
The forum underscores the crucial influence of the Third Pole’s glaciers on Asia’s climate, affecting billions. The opening was marked by an insightful panel discussion at the Vivanta Hotel, alongside celebrating The Energy and Resources Institute’s 50-year journey towards promoting sustainable practices in the region.
Among the esteemed speakers are HRH Queen Diambi Kabatusuila, Ranjit Barthakur, Founder of the Balipara Foundation, Lord Nicholas Stern from the London School of Economics, and representatives from HDFC, Tata Steel, and Google Asia Pacific. Discussions span a range of critical topics, including ESG regulations, renewable energy, water security, ecosystem valuation, and the integration of indigenous knowledge into conservation efforts.
Queen Diambi advocated for a shift toward indigenous systems of sustainable development, emphasizing a move beyond traditional Western paradigms and fostering cultural respect for all forms of life. Barthakur highlighted the global importance of amplifying community voices to advocate for the Third Pole’s significance.
Additionally, the forum extends its discourse to educational institutions like Royal Global University, Gauhati University, and Cotton University, fostering student engagement on sustainability and youth’s role in regional development.
Concluding on November 27, the forum will feature the Balipara Foundation Awards, celebrating 14 grassroots leaders for their exceptional contributions to preserving the Eastern Himalaya’s biocultural heritage. This event not only raises awareness but strengthens collaborative efforts for a sustainable future in the Himalayas and beyond.
