In Assam’s Sarupeta, a building materials supplier named Anand Singh alleges he was duped out of Rs 50 lakh by Melo Enterprise, a construction firm that abandoned a railway housing project. Singh had supplied essential materials, including stones, sand, and bricks for a housing project under the Sarupeta Railway Division back in 2021. Despite the significant delivery, Singh claims he hasn’t seen a rupee in payment.
The situation has left Singh in a dire state, as he faces mounting pressure from creditors. His distress is palpable, to the point where he’s hesitant to leave his home. In his search for a resolution, Singh embarked on multiple trips to Bhalukpong, located along the Assam-Arunachal border, in hopes of confronting the company’s proprietor, Anuk Lyak. Unfortunately, his efforts have yielded no results.
Adding to the complexity, the Sarupeta Railway Division has since transferred the unfinished project to another contractor. Attempts to address the unpaid dues with railway officials were met with claims of ignorance regarding the situation.
A collector associated with MS Melo Enterprises, who originates from Bhalukpong, provided further insight, recounting how he has consistently supplied building materials like cement and sand to a contractor from Barpeta Road since 2021. Despite continuous promises of payment, not a single penny has been disbursed, echoing Singh’s predicament.
Singh’s persistent efforts to reach Anuk Lyak, characterized by numerous unanswered phone calls since 2021, highlight the profound impact this ordeal has had on both his personal and professional life.
This case underscores the vulnerability of local suppliers facing financial strain and legal ambiguity when larger corporate entities fail to honor contracts, spotlighting a growing issue in the construction sector.
