Indulge in Exquisite Bliss: Fill Your Cup with Award-Winning Teas
Each year, as booklists and tea compilations become a tradition, recent accolades in the tea industry highlight notable achievements. This year, the Leafies—international tea awards organized by the UK Tea Academy and Fortnum & Mason—recognized the finest in global tea craftsmanship. Out of 400 entries, judged blindly by an international jury, are four categories: Gold, Highly Commended, Retail, and Special awards.
India celebrated notable victories with 3 Golds and 5 Highly Commended accolades. Jay Shree Tea, a Kolkata-based company, emerged as a front-runner, receiving the highest number of awards by a single company. Maitreyi Kandoi, representing Jay Shree Tea, views this recognition as a significant achievement for Indian tea, especially for Darjeeling, renowned for its exquisite flavors. Among the winners were three Darjeeling teas: Turzum Estate’s Steamed and Panned Green tea and Balasun Estate’s Mystic Black tea, both securing Gold. Meanwhile, the Moondrop from Puttabong Estate received a Highly Commended award. The Steamed and Panned Green tea, notable for blending Japanese and Chinese green tea traditions, excelled in the experimental category.
The Golden Tips from Assam’s Greenwood Estate was another standout, earning a Gold award. Additional commendations included the Ripple Premium White Tea from Kanan Devan and Masala Chai from Khongea Estate. The Teas of the World awards by AVPA France also highlighted Indian talent, with distinctions for Darjeeling’s Phuguri Estate Clonal Tippy Tea and a Kashmiri Kahwa winning Silver and Bronze, respectively. At the North American Tea Conference, Assam’s Dikom Estate’s Golden Pearl and an Orthodox Black from Mangalam earned top honors.
Beyond India’s success, Taiwanese teas were prominently featured among winners, reflecting their mastery in black and oolong teas. Enthusiasts can explore these award-winning teas through various online platforms. Aravinda Anantharaman’s Tea Nanny series continues to highlight such industry milestones and can be found on Twitter for further insights into the tea world.
