Putin Warns of Relentless Power: Russia Threatens Missile Use After Ukraine Attack
Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced the potential use of a newly developed missile following its deployment against Ukraine as a response to Kyiv’s utilization of American and British-made weapons on Russian soil. The missile, known as Oreshnik, was launched at the city of Dnipro on Thursday, marking another increase in hostilities amid the prolonged conflict. During a meeting with Defense Ministry officials and weapons manufacturers on Friday, Putin praised the successful missile test and indicated plans for continued tests under combat conditions, driven by security threats to Russia. He revealed that Russia possesses a stockpile of these missiles and has ordered mass production.
This development comes as Putin lowers the nuclear threshold after President Joe Biden permitted Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles for attacks within Russia. Additionally, Ukraine has deployed UK-manufactured Storm Shadow missiles against Russian targets. Sergey Karakaev, commander of Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces, stated that the new missile can reach targets across Europe, positioning it as superior to some long-range precision weapons. Defense Minister Andrey Belousov also attended the meeting.
Since the conflict’s inception, Ukraine has convinced Western allies to supply air-defense systems, including U.S.-made Patriot batteries, despite initial resistance. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy noted on Friday that his defense minister is currently engaging with partners to discuss new systems capable of mitigating emerging risks. This statement underscores Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to bolster its defense capabilities in response to escalating tensions.
