Desperate Delhi Parents Petition Supreme Court: Urgent Plea for Resuming Life-Changing Physical Classes

Eight parents from Delhi have petitioned the Supreme Court to restart physical classes that were halted due to rising air pollution last week. Among the petitioners is a driver who highlighted that many households lack the technology for virtual learning. Additionally, the mother of a child with special needs emphasized that such children require the specialized care provided by trained schoolteachers that online classes cannot offer. A government school principal noted that in lower-income households, often three or more children share a smartphone for online classes, which hampers their ability to concentrate and learn effectively. This scenario leads to a drop in attendance to about 55% when in-person classes are suspended. While private institutions can manage online teaching, it is more challenging for government schools. Anushree Shivpuri, mother of an autistic child, shared that her son faces difficulties focusing during online lessons, which exacerbates his condition. She pointed out that in schools, shadow teachers and speech therapy, vital for her son, are services that cannot be delivered through virtual platforms. Jyoti Arora, principal of Mount Abu Public School, affirmed that around 25 special needs children at her school also find online learning particularly challenging. This article outlines the pressing concerns of parents and educators who argue that resuming physical classes is essential for providing necessary educational support, particularly for children with special needs.
