Expert Panel Proudly Inspects Revolutionary Shillong Smart City Transformations
The Estimates Committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, under the leadership of Chairman Mayralborn Syiem, MLA of Nongpoh constituency, recently conducted a thorough inspection of pivotal projects under the Shillong Smart City Project. Joining him were committee members Adelbert Nongrum (North Shillong MLA), Remington Gabil Momin (Rambrai-Jyrngam MLA), Wailadmiki Shylla (Jowai MLA), and Miani D Shira (Ampati MLA), along with officials from the Meghalaya Assembly Secretariat, Urban Affairs Department, and PWD (Roads).
The committee assessed key developments, including the Rs 28.84 crore municipal market redevelopment in Laitumkhrah, aimed at improving local commerce. They evaluated smart road initiatives intended to enhance connectivity and alleviate traffic congestion across Shillong.
One highlight of the inspection was a visit to the Mawkhar project site, where an Office cum Automated Multi-level Car Parking is being constructed to resolve the city’s parking crisis. The team also visited the Polo area, where a Rs 100.33 crore Commercial Complex is set to boost economic activities in Shillong.
In Police Bazar, the landmark Rs 211 crore Shillong Business-cum-Tourism and Cultural Centre was reviewed. This ambitious project aspires to promote tourism and cultural interactions, marking a significant investment in the region’s future. Additionally, the committee examined rainwater harvesting systems aimed at improving water management across the city.
Overall, Chairman Mayralborn Syiem expressed satisfaction with the progress but acknowledged challenges such as relocating utilities and shops. He emphasized that these projects, particularly those in advanced stages like the Polo complex, are on track to significantly benefit Shillong’s citizens. The Laitumkhrah and Motphran initiatives, according to Syiem, promise to alleviate traffic woes and enhance parking facilities.
A comprehensive report detailing findings and recommendations will be submitted soon. Chairman Syiem expressed optimism that these projects will be completed timely, contributing to the city’s growth and meeting residents’ needs.
