India Triumphantly Secures Top 10 Position in Global Climate Change Performance Index: A Proud Victory for Sustainability!
GUWAHATI: In the latest Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2025, India has secured the 10th position among 63 nations, continuing to be one of the top performers globally despite a slight drop of two spots from the previous year. The CCPI, published by Germanwatch, the New Climate Institute, and Climate Action Network International, evaluates countries on emissions, renewable energy usage, and climate policies. India’s commendable standing is attributed to its low per-capita emissions and swift transition to renewable energy sources.
Despite these achievements, the report indicates that India is unlikely to make significant changes to its existing climate policies. Instead, the focus is on strengthening growth-driven climate actions to meet the burgeoning energy demands of its growing industrial sector and population. The index, covering 90% of global emissions, also evaluates the European Union. Interestingly, the top three ranks remain unoccupied as no country has secured a “very high” rating across all assessment categories.
In a parallel development, India has urged developed countries to enhance their support for climate adaptation initiatives in less affluent nations. At the ongoing Conference of the Parties (COP) 29, Indian negotiator Rajasree Ray underscored the imbalance in the impact of climate change, where developing countries bear much of the burden from historical emissions by wealthier nations.
