Heartbreaking Denial: India’s Shocking Block on Blind Cricket Team’s T20 World Cup Dreams in Pakistan
The Indian government has refused to grant permission for the nation’s blind cricket team to participate in the T20 World Cup in Pakistan, citing security concerns. This decision effectively prevents the team from competing in the tournament, which is set to take place from November 23 to December 3. The team was due to cross the Wagah border on Wednesday.
Although the players had received a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the sports ministry, allowing them to participate in the tournament without government expenses, clearance from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) was not obtained. This has left the team unable to travel.
Shailendra Yadav, General Secretary of the Indian Blind Cricket Association (IBCA), expressed disappointment over the situation. He mentioned that, unofficially, they have been informed that the team would not be granted permission to travel to Pakistan. Yadav commented, “We were scheduled to travel to Wagah tomorrow. But as of now no clearance has come from the ministry officials.”
The decision has drawn criticism for its timing, as officials held off on the final verdict until just before the team was scheduled to depart. Yadav questioned the logic behind the delay, highlighting that mainstream cricket teams are considered unsafe, so how could the blind team be treated differently. Despite accepting the decision, he pointed out the lack of timely communication, arguing that they should have been informed a month or so in advance to avoid disappointment and logistical challenges.
This development leaves a cloud of uncertainty over India’s participation in the global sporting event, raising questions about the security dynamics in international sports and the policies affecting Indian sports teams abroad.
