Trump’s Bold Cabinet Picks Spark Anxiety and Unrest Among Pakistan’s Leaders
Islamabad, November 18: As Donald Trump prepares to assume the US presidency, key Pakistani think tanks, policymakers, and government officials are reassessing their diplomatic strategies with Washington. With Trump’s initial Cabinet nominations, including Secretary of Defence, Secretary of State, National Security Advisor, and CIA Chief, it appears Islamabad may not be a primary focus compared to New Delhi.
Notable among these nominations is Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State. Rubio, who has introduced the “US-India Defense Cooperation Act” in the Senate, advocates strengthening defense ties with India to counter China’s regional influence. This bill alarmed Pakistani officials, as it suggests treating India as equivalent to longstanding US allies in technology and defense collaboration. Moreover, it criticizes Pakistan for sponsoring terrorism against India, recommending withdrawal of US security aid to Islamabad.
Additionally, Mike Waltz is nominated as National Security Advisor and has voiced criticism of Pakistan’s role in cross-border terrorism, urging for increased pressure on Islamabad. Tulsi Gabbard, set to be the US National Intelligence Director, supported India during the 2019 stand-off with Pakistan and remains vocal about Pakistan’s ties to terrorism, including harboring Al-Qaeda’s Osama Bin Laden.
These strategic appointments are seen as indicative of a US foreign policy shift that could be challenging for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s administration. The Pakistani government is proactively seeking to establish early communication with Trump’s team, acknowledging the need to adapt to this potential diplomatic pivot.
Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir recently asserted that the nation would not align with any conflicting global blocs, a comment believed to signal a cautious approach towards US relations under Trump. As Pakistan navigates this evolving geopolitical landscape, the path forward demands astute diplomacy and strategic recalibration.
