Tragic Clashes in Manipur: Protester Killed as Unrest Intensifies | Heartbreaking Guwahati Update
A 23-year-old protester, Khundrakpam Athouba Singh, was killed and another individual, Keisam Benson (30), was injured during intense clashes between a special police commando force and a mob in Jiribam district, Manipur, on Sunday night. The violence erupted amid ongoing protests over the abduction and murder of six Meitei women and children. Benson was moved to a hospital in Silchar from Jiribam following his injuries. As news of Khundrakpam’s death circulated on Monday, protests intensified across Meitei-populated areas.
In response to the unrest, the Manipur government extended the suspension of internet and mobile data services in seven districts—Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur—for two more days. A total curfew imposed on the valley districts on Saturday also remains in effect.
Authorities are probing the violent clash, establishing a team led by IGP (intelligence) K Kabib. This recent unrest follows the discovery of three bodies in Manipur’s Barak River, fueling protests across the Imphal Valley. The deceased are believed to be among the six individuals missing from a conflict zone between security forces and militants. In Churachandpur district, hundreds demonstrated, demanding justice for 10 people killed in similar confrontations. While police claim these victims were militants, local Kuki groups maintain they were village volunteers. The Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights has called for a judicial inquiry into the incidents.
The ongoing tension and protests reflect deep-seated issues within the region, driving authorities to take preventive measures to maintain order and seek accountability for these violent occurrences.
